CCS Network Inventory

Red Icons in CCS Network Inventory

Sometimes when you scan your network for available machines, you see some machine names marked with a small red icon as shown in the figure below. This indicates that CCS Network Inventory was unable to connect to and scan those particular machines, and that some additional configuration is needed on the PCs.

There could be a number of reasons for this red icon:
1. Not enough rights to connect to remote machines
2. Unable to ping the remote machine under 1500ms response time
3. Can’t ping the machine as host name (only IP address).
4. Machine is Win9x/Me, and cannot be connected to remotely
5. Required ports for CCS Network Inventory are closed on remote machines (Please see System Requirements for CCS Network Inventory).
If you don’t have any of the issues described above and still seeing a red icon with your machines, it could be because:

1. Computer Browser service isn’t started.
2. Remote Registry service is not started.
3. File and Print sharing not enabled.

Solutions

Grant more privileges for the process by using the RunAs command:

The RunAs command is used to grant the CCS Network Inventory process more rights to the remote client.

Change XP Security Policy to allow Workgroup security like in W2K:

If your remote clients are only in WORKGROUP (not DOMAIN), you will need to change this policy to allow workgroup security. You also need local admin rights to all remote clients.

Remote Connection Analyzer

If you have checked your machines for the issues mentioned above, but are still unable to scan remote machines, the Remote Connection Analyzer tool will help you analyze your connection to the remote computers. Download this program and run it against your remote client and send us the log results from the program to support@crowcanyon.com.
